French president Macron names centre-right politician Edouard Philippe as PM

He traveled to Berlin a day after being sworn in, continuing a tradition of French presidents making their first foreign trip to Germany.

Many conservatives around Merkel are sceptical of Macron's calls for closer integration.

Then, a large crowd outside the chancellery welcomed Macron to Berlin, with some waving European Union flags.

Olivier Ihl, an academic from the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies, said the visit was "an important moment because he wants to relaunch Franco-German cooperation in a Europe that is on its knees".

"The renovation is on the move [en marche in French, a play on the name of En Marche! party founded by Macron]: six appointments, six men, six whites, six enarques [graduates of prestigious Ecole nationale d'administration]".

Looking ahead to her meeting with Macron, she added: "I will say first let us have openness, to find things in common, and not start with everything that can't be done". "He has placed himself outside of our political family", LR secretary general Bernard Accoyer said.

The ceremony was held on Monday at Hotel Matignon, the official Paris residence of the prime minister of France. He represented the Socialist Party in his early career but has gradually shifted to the right.

Furthermore, by picking a young modernizer for the prime ministerial role, the new head of state, who pledged to turn the page of the right-left ruling era, sent a strong sign of political renewal that he has bet on in order to reunite divided French citizens and make France stronger, analysts said.

He was a socialist in his younger days before switching his allegiances to the right.
