Arsenal's 'fighting spirit' has returned, says manager Arsene Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes finishing outside the Premier League top four will not in any way affect the club's transfer business for next season.

The Reds secured a comprehensive 4-0 win at the Olympic Stadium to put one foot into the Champions League next season, but Wenger was clearly unimpressed with the Hammers, if he did indeed mean them when making the comment below.

Behind champions Chelsea and Tottenham, Liverpool (73 points, 37 games), City (72, 36) and Arsenal (69, 36) are chasing the final two top-four spots.

If Liverpool defeat the relegated Middlesbrough on Sunday and City take four points from matches at home to West Bromwich and away to Watford it will be impossible for Arsenal to finish in the top four.

Asked about foreign clubs' ability to be strong both in Europe and domestically, Wenger said: "I feel in Spain, Real Madrid can win games by playing some at a lower percentage of the maximum than you can in England". Normally in an ideal world you want to rely on your own results. "Some teams turn up, some go on holiday", he said. "The players have to show they can play at this level because for most of the season, we have not been able to show that".

"I'm not influenced by that at all, all I can do is give my best". After that, "Gunners" have won five of six meetings in the Premier League and reached the League Cup final. "The only chance we have to be in the top four is to win our games".

He said that since he and Jones have both played in the AL East for years, it is likely that they have had different experiences. Starting pitcher Chase Anderson continued his solid campaign, allowing two earned runs and striking out four in 4 2/3 innings.

"We knew that at the start of the game, so we knew we had to win no matter what".

"It's just a shame we didn't get the result we would have liked".

"That will be four points more than previous year, so let's focus on finishing as well as we can".

Arsenal finished second and without a trophy last season.

"So you don't want to complain, do it better during the season and you will not have this problem".

Wenger's situation is also a topic of intense debate, as many Arsenal supporters demand the Frenchman - out of contract at the end of the season - makes way for a change in leadership.
