Elon Musk Reveals Test Run of Electric Sled

Elon Musk, a man of means by no means, released a batch of new images and videos from his latest high-concept tunnel venture, The Boring Company. Watch below. These sleds would transport cars and automatically switching from one tunnel to the next. Further down the line, Musk hopes to cover the whole greater Los Angeles area with his network of underground tunnels.

Though it's not clear where Musk's first tunnel beneath SpaceX will ultimately lead to, one can presume that it would connect the space company with nearby LAX airport.

That would require some major advances in tunnel design (like reducing the diameter of these tunnels) and improvements in boring machinery.

The video comes with a warning that it might trigger seizures or cause motion sickness.

Technology like this would enable travel from Westwood, California to LAX in just five minutes, Musk said. He says the machine will be "a few hundred feet long when complete".

Traffic sucks, especially LA-level traffic, but the phenomenon of "induced demand"-that is, if you build more road capacity, it'll eventually become full once again-would make Musk's idea futile". The scenario is depicted in an animation video posted on The Boring Company's website.

Considering that President Donald Trump has selected Musk as one of his strategic and policy forum advisors, however, Musk is in a good position to propose and conduct ambitious projects like The Boring Company.

In December 2016, Elon Musk tweeted out that traffic in LA was driving him nuts, and that he was going to get a tunnel boring machine and "just start digging".

Musk said he intends to increase the power of the tunnel-boring machine tenfold.

Musk first showed a visualization of how the tunnel system could work in an April TED Talk.

Let's begin at the beginning, with a photo on Instagram showing the entrance to the test tunnel located in the parking lot at SpaceX headquarters.
