Justice Karnan was found guilty of contempt for hurling corruption charges against Supreme Court judges including the Chief Justice.

The SC judges said this amounted to degrading the judiciary, and that Karnan should be punished for the offense.

At this, the counsel said that he was appearing for Justice Karnan and produced the waqalatnama, or authorisation, by him, and said it had been notorised in Chennai.

He filed a petition in the Supreme Court before a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar, on which CJI Kehar said that the court will look into the matter.

A police team from West Bengal reached Chennai on Wednesday to execute the Supreme Court order to arrest Karnan.

Justice Karnan was at the State Guest House in Chennai when the seven-Judge Bench slapped the jail term on him.

Justice CS Karnan has been on a warpath with the Supreme Court for the past several months. The top court has repeatedly summoned the 61-year-old judge who retires next month but Karnan has refused to budge, issuing single-page orders from his Kolkata home. The SC had also directed the constitution of a medical board to examine Karnan.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh police have launched a manhunt to trace Karnan.

Justice Karnan, who was divested of his judicial and administrative powers following his tussle with the supreme court, had on May 8 passed an order against the seven-judge bench and another apex court judge. After a closed-door meeting with the then Chief Justice, T S Thakur, Karnan accepted the transfer and apologised for his actions saying that he had lost his "mental balance". He stated that the Supreme Court's latest order was an "insult" to a Dalit judge.

Justice Karnan has been accused of circulation of disparaging letters against sitting High Court judges of the Madras High Court.
