In call to Trump, Chinese leader urges restraint over NKorea

Japan's envoy on North Korea, Kenji Kanasugi, said after talks with his US and South Korean counterparts that they all agreed China should take a concrete role to resolve the crisis and it could use an oil embargo as a tool to press the North.

SEOUL, April 25 (Reuters) - North Korea conducted a big live-fire exercise on Tuesday to mark the foundation of its military, media reported, as a usa submarine docked in South Korea in a show of force amid growing concern over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programmes.

The drill was held around the eastern port city of Wonsan as North Korea marked the 85 founding anniversary of its military, Yonhap news agency reported.

China's nuclear envoy Wu Dawei also arrived in Japan on Tuesday to exchange views on a solution on the Korean Peninsula, China's foreign ministry said.

Pyongyang reacted angrily to the aircraft carrier deployment, threatening to sink it and launch a "super-mighty pre-emptive strike" against what it called USA aggression.

The editorial also suggested the absence of a nuclear or missile provocation on Tuesday was no guarantee the Kim Jong Un regime would refrain from a test in the near future. It was not known how he is marking Tuesday's anniversary.

North Korea has so far conducted five confirmed nuclear tests and numerous missile test-launches.

Adding to the tensions, North Korea detained a USA citizen on Saturday, bringing the number of Americans being held there to three.

In Tokyo, US representative for North Korea Policy Joseph Yun was meeting Tuesday with his Japanese counterpart Kenji Kanasugi and Kim Hong-kyun of South Korea.

The three envoys held talks in Tokyo on Tuesday, where they agreed that China and Russian Federation have vital roles to push nuclear towards denuclearisation. Trump spoke again to the leaders of China and Japan late Sunday to discuss the matter.

On Monday, Trump called on the U.N. Security Council to impose tougher sanctions against the North, saying the status quo is unacceptable and it's "a problem that we have to finally solve".

Harris says he has no doubt North Korea intends to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States.

Mr Trump on Monday urged UN Security Council ambassadors to consider stronger sanctions against Pyongyang, and United States senators will be briefed on North Korea at the White House on Wednesday.

The newspaper also mentioned that Washington has yet to name its new ambassador to Seoul three months after the departure of Mark Lippert and questioned whether Trump has "entirely left out South Korea in his picture for the Korean Peninsula".

"China is very much the economic lifeline to North Korea so, while nothing is easy, if they want to solve the North Korean problem, they will", the US President tweeted on Saturday. It also a year ago launched a long-range rocket that delivered a satellite into orbit, which Washington, Seoul and others saw as a banned test of missile technology.

There are concerns that China's ability to secure a peaceful solution to the current spike in tensions has been damaged by repeated snubs by the North, which has ignored its calls to comply with United Nations resolutions.

On April 15, North Korea offered a look at its advancing nuclear weapon and missile programs in a massive military parade in Pyongyang honoring late state founder Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of the current ruler.

"The North Korean nuclear and missile problem is an extremely serious security threat to not only the global community but also our country", the Japanese leader told reporters in Tokyo afterwards.
