The first full day of campaigning got off to a flying start Thursday following British Prime Minister Theresa May's decision to call a snap general election.

But she added: "Also, of course, as UK Prime Minister, I have an interest and a care for UK citizens living in European Union member states".

Jeremy Corbyn is resisting Mrs May's efforts to make Britain's exit from the European Union the defining issue of the election, insisting the poll instead gives voters a chance to pass judgment on the Conservatives' record on austerity and public spending cuts.

If the polls are correct, the Conservatives could secure a once-in-a-generation victory that will realign the British political landscape.

"At this moment of enormous national significance there should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division. the country is coming together but Westminster is not", she said, blaming opposition parties for threats to obstruct Brexit.

Polls place Corbyn's Labour Party some distance from the Conservatives, with two surveys over the weekend giving the government a 21 point lead.

"We have consistently demanded a meaningful vote in Parliament and, as the government, will bring the deal we negotiate to Parliament before it is finalised to ensure democratic accountability". That position was echoed by Mr Hammond, speaking in Washington, who said the government had solved the problem of pensioner poverty.

In 2015, the SNP scored its biggest ever electoral success, sending more than 50 MPs to Westminster. Now the party has no MPs at Westminster.

Downing Street originally indicated that the by-election, triggered by the death of Labour veteran Sir Gerald Kaufman, would go ahead.

Mrs May is to be congratulated on taking the bull by the horns in calling for a vote of confidence in her Brexit negotiations.
