NCAA returns events to North Carolina

Now, many towns across the state are optimistic after the NCAA said a majority of the board "reluctantly" agreed to allow consideration of championship bids in North Carolina. The NCAA pulled seven events from the state for the 2016-17 season, including men's basketball tournament games from Greensboro in March, in response to the law.

For first and second round men's basketball tournament play, the NCAA selected Columbia to host in 2019, Greensboro in 2020, Raleigh in 2021 and Greenville in 2022.

The ACLU, which has been conducting a write-in campaign to hammer NCAA president Mark Emmert for this nakedly hypocriitcal act and has submitted a public records request to various cities in North Carolina to find out what-if anything-might be done to prevent discrimination, also chimed in. Following similar moves by the NCAA and National Basketball Association, the ACC had pulled the game from Charlotte in September over HB2, the recently-repealed state law that limited anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

The NCAA announced Tuesday that the 2020 and 2021 Stagg Bowls will be played at the newly-renovated Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, next door to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper signed a compromise bill March 30 while saying it wasn't a ideal solution.

As NorthJersey.com notes, the NCAA used to routinely host events in the Garden State, including the 2011 Final Four, but once the state moved to legalize sports gambling at casinos, the NCAA was gone. "And this new law restores the state to that legal landscape: a landscape similar to other jurisdictions presently hosting NCAA championships".

Additional events returning to Greensboro are listed here. It will return to North Carolina in 2019 (Charlotte) and 2020 (Greensboro).

According to Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA), the economic impact of the ACC Championship game in 2015 was $32.4 million.

The state also has a previously scheduled men's basketball subregional in 2018 in Charlotte.

HB2 was repealed earlier this month at the 11th hour after the collegiate organization made it clear that it would remove events through 2022 from the state if HB2 was not taken off the books.

Selected to host regionals in 2019 are Albany, New York (Times Union Center), Chicago (Wintrust Arena), Greensboro, North Carolina (Greensboro Coliseum) and Portland, Oregon (Moda Center), with play taking place March 29-April 1.

Jacksonville University will be the host institution for the NCAA games in the city, which is the only Florida site with an NCAA regional forthe next two years.
