Trump tweeted Sunday: "I did what was an nearly an impossible thing to do for a Republican-easily won the Electoral College!"

Protesters are expected to take part in Tax Day demonstrations nationwide, calling on President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

"On the campaign trail, Donald Trump lied by saying he would release his tax returns upon the completion of the IRS audit".

"I think it would be in the President's benefit to release them, and I think as the American people, we want to see that", Kinzinger said. He wrote, someone should look into who paid for the small organized rallies yesterday.

Demonstrators participate in a march and rally to demand President Donald Trump release his tax returns, Saturday, April 15, 2017, in NY.

Organisers said they stuck with the traditional April 15 Tax Day for the marches because as a Saturday it would draw more attendance, even though this year's income tax filing deadline was pushed back to Tuesday.

For decades, U.S. presidents and presidential candidates have released their returns voluntarily, although there is no legal obligation to do so.

Trump has said that voters don't care about his tax returns.

Chuck Schumer, D-New York, said Trump's refusal to release his tax returns will make it harder for Congress to pass a tax reform deal, which is a top GOP priority.

The protesters gathered at a rally at Bryant Park, near the New York City Public Library. "Maybe we're not going to be the one group to get him to finally share his taxes but we can inspire people".

There were no reports of violence or arrests, in contrast to a clash between Trump supporters and opponents that erupted at a rally in Berkeley, California, where nine people were arrested.

Kinzinger's comments came after press secretary Sean Spicer dealt another blow to transparency advocates Monday, announcing that Trump's 2016 tax returns are under audit and therefore would not be released.

More than 100 similar marches are scheduled across the country on Saturday.

Retired teacher Mike Mannshardt of Pittsboro says he believes the documents may show that Trump is indebted and beholden to Russian or other unfriendly foreign interests.

It was seen by some as the unofficial mascot for the protest - to suggest that the Republican president was afraid, or chicken, to publish his records.

And making the audits automatic may have been meant to bolster public confidence that the IRS will audit presidents of both parties and not let it become something the agency does at its discretion, according to tax lawyer Steven Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center.
