Allies Of Syria's Assad Say U.S. Attack Crosses 'Red Lines'

Syria is at the top of the geopolitical agenda after a surprise decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to launch an airstrike against one of Assad's air bases last week. Nikki Haley's comments in an interview that was aired on April 9 came as part of an apparent shift in USA policy toward al-Assad's government after the alleged chemical attack last week on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed 87 people, including many children.

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley said that new actions could be taken against Syria. "It just - if you look at his actions, if you look at the situation, it's going to be hard to see a government that's peaceful and stable with Assad".

Defence Minister Marise Payne said the United States was yet to ask Australia for more military assistance in the Syrian conflict, but was keeping the Government updated on developments.

He said the United Kingdom continues to "deplore" Moscow's defence of Mr Assad's regime as he pulled out of talks with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. "It's important that we keep our priorities straight".

The Trump administration had seemed ambivalent over whether it would push for regime change in Syria.

Defeating Islamic State, pushing Iranian influence out of Syria, and the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are priorities for Washington, Haley said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union" which will air in full on Sunday.

"There is no such thing as Assad yes, but ISIS no", Rubio said.

"We do not have any information that suggests that Russian Federation was part of the military attack undertaken using the chemical weapons", Tillerson said. "There's an agreement with him not to use chemical weapons".

He wrote: "By sending Tomahawk missiles to attack the airfield, aeroplanes and equipment believed to be involved, it has sent a strong signal to the Syrian regime to think twice before using gas in the future".

The United States has been warned it crossed a "red line" with its missile strikes on Syria and faces retaliation in response to future aggression against Bashar Assad.
