Salute to Chuck Berry opens Rock Hall ceremony

Letterman was quick to joke about the switch, saying, "I know Neil Young was supposed to be here".

"Shoot, honey, I thought you were sitting down in the front", Vedder said to laughs. He thanked his brothers in Pearl Jam, and in his other band, Soundgarden (another glaring omission from the Rock Hall, by the way).

His wife, Jill, was teary-eyed in the audience as fans continued to cheer.

He also revealed that frontman Eddie Vedder had personally gifted a guitar to his son.

Shakur, who was gunned down under murky circumstances in Las Vegas in 1996, was honored posthumously as the first solo rapper to be inducted into the rock shrine.

In a candid and touching remembrance for his former labelmate and close friend, Snoop Dogg tackled the duties of inducting Tupac Shakur into the Rock Hall, recalling the pair's rise through '90s hip hop together in a six-minute speech.

Portraying Tupac as more complicated than caricatures, Snoop Dogg said: "To be human is to be many things at once - strong and vulnerable, hard-headed and intellectual, courageous and afraid, loving and vengeful, revolutionary and, oh yeah... gangsta!" Also performing are Alicia Keys, Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Indigo Girls. In one of the classiest moves of the evening, he tossed praise at Arnel Pineda, the Filipino singer discovered on YouTube who has kept the vocals created by Perry alive since 2007.

KFC to stop serving chickens raised with certain antibiotics

Why Taylor Swift has stepped away from the spotlight
Swift has been spending a lot of time in Nashville lately, which suggests the latter might be more likely. She told the attendees of her show that they have attended all of her concerts that year.

Journey's induction was highlighted by the appearance of longtime singer Steve Perry, who last performed with the band in 1991.

That didn't stop band founder Neal Schon from doing his own shout-out, dedicating the Journey hit "Lights" to Perry. "You put us here", he said. "I've been gone a long time, I understand that, but I want you to know that you've never not been in my heart".

Like Shakur and Pearl Jam, Baez and ELO were all elected in their first year as nominees.

Rock "n" roll doesn't throw many parties like the yearly Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

After Geddy Lee helped "right a wrong" by inducting Yes into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rush bassist joined his prog-rock heroes onstage for a crushingly loud run-through of "Roundabout". He did, however, point out it was "bittersweet" to take over for late Yes bassist Chris Squire, who passed away in 2015 and didn't live to see his band recognized. Guitarist Nile Rodgers will be given the hall's Award for Musical Excellence, the Hall of Fame said on its website.

This year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will debut on HBO at 8PM ET on April 29.

There's only one - artists are not eligible until 25 years after the release of their first record.
