O.J. still locked up, but now he's changing Oscar rules

The new regulation, announced as part of a handful of tweaks in Oscar voting, follows the Oscar win in February for Ezra Edelman's acclaimed 467-minute-long "O.J.: Made in America".

The Academy announced new rules for the Oscars Friday, including one that would have prevented this year's documentary feature victor, Ezra Edelman's 467-minute miniseries O.J.: Made in America, from being a contender. But it nearly certainly would attract the scrutiny of the doc branch's executive committee which, I'm told by sources close to the Academy, would, per the new rule, seek to determine the principal format for which the doc was created.

AMPAS announced the new rules for the upcoming 90th Annual Academy Awards on Friday.

"O.J.: Made in America" is an eight-hour documentary that was shown as a film with intermissions at major film festivals and limited theaters, thus qualifying for Oscar contention.

"In the Documentary categories, multi-part or limited series are not eligible for awards consideration", the new rules state. The eight-hour documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival previous year, showed in limited qualifying theatrical runs in Los Angeles and NY before being broadcast as a five-part series on ABC and ESPN.

For the first time, nominations voting in the Animated Feature Film category will be opened up to the entire eligible voting membership. The nominations round will also drop its former numerical scoring system in favor of a preferential system like the one used for determining Best Picture. Previously, nominations for Best Animated Feature were made by a committee consisting of an equal mix of Branch members-who have to have worked on at least two animated features, or been nominated in one of the animation categories before-and general Academy members. "Too late, I guess".

Other new rules this year included Academy members no longer being allowed to attend any lunches or dinners for a film contending for Oscars that does not include a screening.
