While YouTube TV is a different beast altogether, strictly streaming TV-like offerings advertisers would deem "safe", it launches in the midst of a particularly bad PR moment, which might hurt its early legs. You can check out anytime you want, even less than a month after you signed up, if you are not happy with the service and fare that you are receiving. Google is tempting people to try out its new TV offering by throwing in a free Chromecast.

With the vast amount of data available to YouTube, it should be interesting to see if they can truly target this segment and if there is a wider appeal, rather than just those who have chose to break away from the likes of Comcast. For now, that's the only way to get YouTube TV on a TV, since there aren't yet apps for connected TV devices.

YouTube TV can be watched on phone, tablet or computer and can be streamed on a television via a Google Chromecast. Hulu plans to launch a similar service later this year.

The service is available in just five markets now: Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. I searched for the Spurs - my favorite NBA basketball team - and was able to quickly set YouTube TV up to record every Spurs game that airs on the service, something that's frequently hard to do with other TV services. YouTube TV offers limited channel selection - while it offers ESPN, CBS, FOX, it lacks several key channels and networks like PBS, Comedy Central, and CNN. Perhaps the best is its cloud-based DVR.

YouTube could also stand to take a cue from TiVo recorders and let you automatically record all programs featuring, say, Jennifer Lawrence, including her talk-show appearances. No doubt the fare on TV has improved by leaps and bounds over the years, but when will the technological drive be there to enable us to watch live TV regardless of where we are, and the kind of device that we use? Eventually, YouTube TV could be a really great service.

The analysis found more than 200 anti-Semitic videos, and that Google had failed to remove six of them within the 24-hour period mandated by the European Union after it anonymously signaled their presence. You can expect all the online pay TV services to track what you're watching, of course, but few likely have as much data on you already as does Google. The cloud DVR allows customers to stream recordings wherever they are within the U.S. No need to share passwords; they sign in with their own Google accounts.
