Georgetown hires Ewing as men's basketball coach

It's about time Patrick Ewing has become a head basketball coach.

While it is a bit surprising that Ewing will leave right before the playoffs as Charlotte attempts to make a late push for the postseason, Steve Clifford reportedly has no problem with it.

Despite finishing his final two years with a combined record of 19-36, the youngest of the Thompson coaches leaves Georgetown in high regard, according to school president Jack Degioia.

Thompson III coached Georgetown for 13 seasons, including a run to the Final Four in 2007 with future National Basketball Association players Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert.

Bringing Ewing in means Georgetown still wants to be counted among the schools that are known to be Division I competitors.

Patrick Ewing was expected to be a candidate for the Georgetown vacancy, and now, after the program has taken its time going through the process, everything appears to be falling together.

No player has done more for Georgetown than Ewing, and now the fate of the Hoyas is in his hands. He was drafted first overall by the New York Knicks and was named Rookie of the Year. Ewing, however, is a natural fit in many respects and was immediately floated by many as a possibility once the decision to find a new coach was made.

While that latter part is the case with Georgetown, too, Ewing has bounced around the National Basketball Association as an assistant coach since 2003, most recently with the Charlotte Hornets. Perhaps he can prove himself with the Hoyas and graduate up to the National Basketball Association. He will have the support of the team's playing and coaching legends, including his college coach John Thompson.
