Rose suffers torn meniscus, complicating off-season free agency plans

The Knicks point guard is being shut down after he suffered a torn meniscus, the team announced, which will require arthroscopic surgery.

As New York faces a rebuild, though, Rose's injury history will likely cause the Knicks to cut ties with him this offseason.

The original diagnosis was a sore knee, and Rose had missed three consecutive games - including Sunday against the Celtics.

Rose previously tore his meniscus in 2013. He said on Wednesday that he initially felt the discomfort in his knee before the Knicks' win over the Pistons on Monday, in which he played 33 minutes and scored 27 points. Since the 2011-12 season Rose has not averaged more than 20 points per game in a season.

Rose and his agent, B.J. Armstrong, have both said publicly that Rose would like to return to NY as a free agent. Now, it has developed into yet another major injury to add on to an extensive list of health issues that derailed his promising career.

He has had multiple knee problems since his 2010-11 MVP season with the Chicago Bulls.

It also caps a troubled first season in NY for the 2011 NBA MVP following his move from the Chicago Bulls a year ago.

The inability to stay healthy forced the Bulls to deal Rose to the Knicks during the 2016 draft.

Rose was averaging 18.0 points and 4.4 assists in his first season in NY. "I'll be a free agent".
