Dustin Johnson Stays Hot With Dell Match Play Win

Johnson was pushed to the final hole in Sunday's semifinal with Japan's Hideto Tanihara, the first time all week he was forced to play past the 15th hole.

The reigning US Open champion won the WGC HSBC Champions in 2013, the WGC Cadillac Championship in 2015, the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in 2016 and the WGC Mexico Championship earlier this month.

Rahm had beaten Bill Haas 3 and 2 in the semifinals, and Haas went on to beat Tanihara 2 and 1 in the consolation finals.

Dustin Johnson, of the United States, tees off on the 5th hole during the final round of the Mexico Championship at Chapultepec Golf Club in Mexico City, Sunday, March 5, 2017.

"This was a tough one, a tough match against Jon", Johnson said.

Playing the 356-yard 18th hole for the first time in competition all week, and needing a birdie to send this heavyweight bout to overtime, Rahm smashed his drive over the back of the green. It was his third straight victory, and it left no doubt as to who is the No. 1 golfer in the world.

However, Rahm's frustration was mounting rapidly and he kicked his driver along the ground in frustration after a wayward drive on the next led to another loss and a five-hole deficit.

But he finally looked beatable against Tanihara. It would now be a three-shot hole for him, at best, and he needed to punch his second shot under some thick trees to get back into play. But he saved par at No. 11 and faced another 5-footer for par at No. 12.

"Today was a really tough day", Johnson told NBC television after sinking his winning putt from inside three feet at the final hole.

Asked if he regretted not stopping his vehicle when he was aware police were pursuing him, he responded: "Most definitely". After waking up from unconsciousness six days later (the day of Mardis' funeral) Few finally realized what had happened.

But it wasn't a swing in momentum. Rahm also took the 15th, leaving Johnson two up with three to play. From there, Johnson appeared to be playing not to lose.

In 2009 the WGC-Champions was introduced in China, meaning all four WGCs were individual events and now DJ has become the first man to win all four. He stuck a wedge close on the 15th for another birdie.

Rahm, in his first year on tour and already a victor at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this season in San Diego, knocked drives past his famously long opponent and eventually pulling back to within one hole after birdieing the 13th, 15th and 16th holes, the latter on a 32-foot putt that sought out the hole like a laser. Thus, he left himself an extremely hard 15-20 foot putt with a lot of break right-to-left. Haas squandered a great chance to halve the match when Rahm missed the 14th green long, hit a flop shot about 20 feet by and made bogey.

But such heroics are of little value if the player doesn't capitalise and Rahm once again proved himself capable in the biggest moments by getting up and down, with a 30-foot putt, for a winning birdie. Rahm took it from there.

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - D.A. Points was never better at the start, and good enough at the end. And he joined Greg Norman and Vijay Singh, a couple members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, as the only players to win their first two events after becoming No. 1 in the world. The victory gives him a two-year exemption.

He won the opening hole in six straight matches, and never even heard the referee say, "The match is all square" until Johnson had played 71 holes.

Lee, of South Korea, shot a 7-under 65 to win by six strokes Sunday and tie Kerr's tournament record. He's the first player since Rory McIlroy in 2014 to win three consecutive US PGA Tour starts.

Lee twice just missed putts that would have put her at 21 under. Rahm then drove it over the green on 18, but failed to get up-and-down for a birdie. He led after 105 of the 112 holes he played in the tournament.
